淡水為北臺灣基督長老教會發展的根據地，而功勞最大者首當加拿大長老教會馬偕牧師。馬偕博士於西元 1872 年 3 月 9 日 抵達淡水後，就積極地展開傳教的工作。也學習閩南語和地方文化，而原租賃的房子，不但是作為醫院，也是傳教的地方。
