蜂窩岩的形成都是由結核上的生物碎屑所造成的，形成步驟分為三階段：富含生物碎屑：結核裡面有許多貝類和海膽碎屑，密密麻麻布滿整顆結核。溶蝕成小洞：生物碎屑被海水溶解，或因岩石崩解，在結核表面形成一個個小洞。形成蜂窩岩：海水的鹽分繼續進行崩解作用，逐漸將小洞擴大，於是形成蜂窩形狀。
